The GTA VI map is the largest Rockstar has ever built. Not just bigger than GTA V — bigger by a margin that has map analysts rethinking what an open-world game can hold.
Based on the official trailer, Rockstar’s press materials, and community analysis of leaked footage, the GTA 6 map locations now include at least nine named areas across the fictional state of Leonida. This is not Los Santos with a swamp bolted on. It is a full recreation of Florida’s geography — from the Miami skyline to the Everglades to the Keys — compressed into a playable space larger than anything Rockstar has shipped before.
Here is every confirmed place, what it looks like, and what you will actually do there.

GTA 6 Map Locations: The Full List
| Location | Real-World Inspiration | What to Expect |
|---|---|---|
| Vice City | Miami | Urban core, beaches, nightlife |
| Vice City Beach | South Beach | Tourist strip, oceanfront properties |
| Leonida Keys | Florida Keys | Island chain, bridges, boating |
| Grassrivers | Everglades | Swamp, airboats, wildlife |
| Port Gellhorn | Panama City | Industrial port, working-class town |
| Ambrosia | Clewiston | Farmland, rural backroads |
| Mount Kalaga | Appalachian foothills | Elevation, forest, overlooks |
| Leonida State Prison | State correctional facility | Lucia’s backstory location |
| Lake Leonida | Lake Okeechobee | Freshwater lake, cycling trail |
Vice City — The Urban Core
First of all, Vice City is the anchor of the map. It is not the same city from the 2002 game — Rockstar has rebuilt it from the ground up at modern scale. The skyline includes skyscrapers with working elevators, a first for the series. The map includes shopping malls, rooftop venues, and over 700 enterable interiors according to leaked data — more than any previous GTA by a factor of three or four.

Vice City Beach, modeled on South Beach, runs along the eastern edge of the map. Expect the kind of tourist chaos that GTA games thrive on: crowded boardwalks, beachfront properties with helicopter pads, and a nightlife district that lights up after dark.
The urban area is dense in a way Los Santos never was. Where GTA V’s map spread wide with mountains and desert filling the gaps, the GTA 6 map locations in Vice City proper are stacked vertically — interiors above interiors, rooftop access, and underground parking structures that connect entire blocks.
Leonida Keys — The Island Chain
The Keys are a string of islands connected by bridges, inspired by the Florida Keys and likely including a version of the Seven Mile Bridge. This is where the map design gets interesting: islands create natural gameplay boundaries without invisible walls. You reach the Keys by boat, by plane, or by driving the bridge chain.

Leaked footage from 2022 showed a boat chase through the Keys at sunset, with the player switching between driving and shooting. The water physics in that footage suggested a level of wave simulation that goes well beyond GTA V’s flat ocean — swells, wake from other boats, and weather-driven water behavior that affects handling.
The Keys are also where you find the more secluded properties. Beach houses, private docks, and hidden coves that serve as stash points or safehouses. If you played GTA V and wished the ocean actually had things to find, this is Rockstar’s answer.
Grassrivers — The Swamp
Grassrivers is Leonida’s version of the Everglades. It is a vast wetland area with shallow water, sawgrass, cypress trees, and airboat channels. This is where the GTA 6 map locations shift from urban density to open wilderness — and it serves a specific gameplay purpose that mountains in GTA V never quite achieved.

The swamp is not empty. On the contrary, it is populated with wildlife — alligators, snakes, wading birds — and Rockstar has confirmed that animals play a larger role in GTA VI than in Red Dead Redemption 2, which already set the standard for wildlife simulation. Hunting returns, but this time it is not just a side activity. Certain story missions take place in the swamp, and the terrain itself affects movement and combat in ways that pavement gunfights do not.
Hidden in Grassrivers are meth labs, moonshine operations, and abandoned cabins that serve as mission nodes. The swamp also connects to the lake system, creating a water network that lets you travel from the interior wetlands all the way out to the ocean through navigable rivers.
Port Gellhorn — The Working Coast
Port Gellhorn is the mainland’s second-largest settlement after Vice City. Based on Panama City in the Florida Panhandle, it is a working-class port town with cargo docks, warehouses, and a blue-collar economy that contrasts sharply with Vice City’s glitz.

If Vice City is where you spend money, Port Gellhorn is where you earn it. Specifically, the port is a hub for smuggling missions, dockworker contacts, and cargo theft operations. The surrounding area includes trailer parks, dive bars, and fishing piers — the kind of locations where side characters hand out missions that do not involve million-dollar heists but pay in favors and information.
Port Gellhorn also connects to the highway system that circles the entire map, making it a natural waypoint between the urban south and the rural north.
Ambrosia — The Farmland
Ambrosia is farmland — flat, open, and agricultural, the Clewiston-inspired region of Leonida. Sugar cane fields, dirt roads, and small-town gas stations. In other words, this is where the map breathes.
The farmland serves as a buffer zone between Port Gellhorn and the more remote areas to the north. It is also where you find the kind of vehicle gameplay that needs space: off-road racing, crop duster planes, and long-distance sniper engagements with no cover. Ambrosia is not dense with content, but on a map this large, you need areas that let the player exhale between the intensity of the city and the danger of the swamp.
Mount Kalaga — The High Ground
For the first time in a GTA game set in a coastal region, there is actual elevation. Mount Kalaga rises in the northern part of the map, providing overlooks, hiking trails, and the kind of vertical gameplay that GTA V’s Mount Chiliad made famous.

Unlike Chiliad, Mount Kalaga is not an isolated peak in the middle of nowhere. It sits at the northern edge of the map, with forested slopes that descend into farmland on one side and drop sharply into the ocean on the other. Base jumping, wingsuit flight, and mountain biking are all but confirmed given Rockstar’s continued investment in aerial traversal mechanics.
Other Known Locations
Beyond the major named areas, several smaller locations have appeared in trailer footage, leaked screenshots, and community analysis:
Lake Leonida. A large freshwater lake in the center of the state, ringed by a cycling path and dotted with fishing cabins. The lake connects to the Grassrivers swamp through a navigable river system, making it accessible by boat from the ocean.
Leonida State Prison. Lucia’s backstory is tied to this facility. She served time here before the events of the game, and early story missions involve her release and adjustment to life outside. The prison is located in a remote area of the map, which makes sense — Florida’s state prisons are typically far from population centers.
The Fort. A military installation modeled on Fort Knox that appears in leaked material. Details are thin — Rockstar has not confirmed it officially — but the Fort is believed to be a high-security area containing gold reserves, making it a likely target for a major heist mission.
The Bahamas-style Island. A tropical island that appears to exist offshore, reachable only by boat or plane. The trailer briefly shows a beach that does not match any of the known mainland locations, and map analysts have identified it as a separate landmass similar to Guarma in Red Dead Redemption 2 — but likely accessible freely rather than locked to a specific chapter.
How Big Is the GTA 6 Map?
Rockstar has not released an official square mileage figure. Nevertheless, community mappers have stitched together the coordinates from leaked footage and trailer shots to produce estimated comparisons:
| Game | Estimated Map Size |
|---|---|
| GTA V (Los Santos) | ~29 sq miles |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | ~29 sq miles (land only) |
| GTA VI (estimated) | ~50+ sq miles |
The GTA VI estimate comes from community mapping projects that triangulated leaked development footage coordinates. Treat as approximate until Rockstar releases official data.
Ultimately, the number itself matters less than the density. GTA V’s map was 29 square miles but roughly a third of that was mountains with little to do. In contrast, based on the GTA 6 map locations confirmed so far, Rockstar is packing more interactive content into each square mile — more interiors, more NPC schedules, more dynamic events triggered by location.
What This Means for Gameplay
Above all, the map design directly affects how missions play out. Rockstar is moving away from the “drive across the map to start a mission, then drive across the map during the mission” loop that padded so much of GTA Online.
Each region has its own economy, its own vehicle types, and its own law enforcement response. In Vice City, the police arrive fast and in numbers. Head out to Grassrivers, however, and law enforcement barely exists. Meanwhile, Port Gellhorn cops are corrupt — you can pay them off and walk away.
This regional variation extends to the vehicles NPCs drive — sports cars near the beach, pickup trucks in Ambrosia, airboats in the swamp — and the weapons enemies carry. A gunfight in Port Gellhorn draws dockworkers with shotguns. A gunfight in Vice City draws private security with SMGs.
The map is not just big. It is different depending on where you stand. That is the part that matters.
GTA 6 Map Locations: Bottom Line
The GTA 6 map is Rockstar’s most ambitious open world. Nine confirmed regions span urban, suburban, rural, wetland, island, and mountain terrain — each with distinct gameplay, distinct vehicles, and distinct reasons to go there.
Vice City is the centerpiece, but the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, and Mount Kalaga are not filler between missions. They are the missions. The map is the content.
