GTA 6 digital pre-orders hit roughly $260 million globally in the first week, according to Newzoo. That is the biggest opening pre-order window the firm has ever tracked. More interesting than the total, though, is the split: across nine countries, the $99.99 Ultimate Edition is outselling the $79.99 Standard Edition. So is GTA 6 Ultimate worth it? The market has already voted — with its wallet.
People are choosing to pay more. Not fewer. More.

These are not normal video game numbers. For context, GTA V made $800 million in its first 24 hours back in 2013 — and that was across two console generations. GTA 6 is on track to triple that. On pre-orders alone.
To put that $260 million in perspective: most AAA games do not earn $260 million in their entire lifetime. GTA 6 did it before anyone has played a single minute.

Why GTA 6 Ultimate Is Worth It — The $100 Version Is Winning
This is not what the internet predicted. When Rockstar announced the $99.99 Ultimate Edition in June, the reaction was loud and negative. Reddit called the five locked shops “scummy.” Polygon ran a piece on fan anger. The word “greedy” showed up a lot.
Then people opened their wallets and picked Ultimate anyway.
Three things are going on here.
First, the $20 gap is psychologically small. In a world where a single skin in Valorant costs $25 and a movie ticket runs $18, an extra $20 for a game people will play for five years does not feel like a real decision. As one Reddit user put it: “Let’s be honest, who isn’t getting the Ultimate Edition anyway.”
Second, Rockstar put the real content behind the paywall — not cosmetics. Five physical shops you can walk into. Two side missions you can play. Six vehicles you can drive. Weapons with unique handling. These are not skins. They change what you can do in the game.
Third, and maybe most important: the upgrade path removed the risk. If Standard players regret their choice, they pay $20 later and unlock everything. But almost nobody is choosing Standard in the first place. The upgrade path did not make people buy Standard. The shops are the real draw. Standard Edition players can still customize cars and characters — just through different, smaller locations with less inventory. If you are the type who spends 20 minutes picking tattoos before a mission, the five locked shops matter. If you grab whatever is closest and move on, they do not.

Before these pre-order numbers came out, I assumed most people would pick Standard. The base game is complete. The story is the same. Why pay more?
Apparently I think about money differently than nine regions’ worth of GTA fans.
This is the part where I admit I have been wrong about gaming purchases before. When GTA V launched on PS3, I bought the standard edition. Six months later, I paid for the Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack separately — and spent more total than if I had just bought the deluxe version at launch. The lesson: Rockstar knows how to make the extras feel essential after you have already sunk 50 hours into their world.
The pre-order data suggests millions of people learned the same lesson. They are paying the $20 upfront because they know they will want the content later, and later always costs more.
That said, this logic does not apply to everyone. If $80 is already a stretch — and for a lot of people, it is — the Standard Edition gives you the full story, the full map, and every main mission. You miss five shops and two side missions. The game is still 100+ hours long without them.
Who Should Still Buy Standard
Not everyone needs to follow the crowd. Here is when Standard makes more sense.
You are on a tight budget. $20 is real money. The core experience — Jason and Lucia’s story across Leonida — is identical in both editions. You lose zero main content.
You do not care about customization. If you never visit barber shops in GTA games and your cars stay stock, the five locked locations mean nothing to you.
You want to wait and see. The upgrade path is always open. Buy Standard now, play the game in November, and if you find yourself wanting those locked shops, pay the difference then. Rockstar confirmed this works at any time.

You want the complete game. Not “complete” as a marketing term — literally every piece of content Rockstar built for launch. Two missions, five shops, six vehicles, four weapons. If missing anything bothers you, the $20 is cheap peace of mind.
You love character and vehicle customization. The five Ultimate-exclusive shops carry inventory that is not available anywhere else. If you spend hours in the garage or the barber, Standard Edition will feel like walking past locked doors.
You have been waiting 13 years for this game. GTA V came out in 2013. You have waited over a decade for the next one. Another $20 spread across that wait works out to about $1.50 per year. You have already spent more than that on Doritos while reading GTA 6 rumors.

Just because the Ultimate Edition costs $99.99 does not mean you have to pay $99.99.
