GTA V launched at 65GB. Patches pushed it past 105GB. Red Dead Redemption 2 needed 150GB at launch. The GTA 6 file size? Every sign points to 200GB or more.
That number matters because the standard PS5 ships with 825GB of storage — and only 667GB of that is actually usable. One game eats a third of your drive. If you also have Call of Duty and NBA 2K installed, you are already out of room.
Here is what we know about the GTA 6 file size, how to check your current storage, and what to buy if you need more space before November 19.
How Big Will the GTA 6 File Size Be?
Rockstar has not announced the official GTA 6 file size. The game is still four months from launch. But we can make a solid estimate from three data points.
First, Rockstar’s track record. Every major Rockstar release has been bigger than the last:
| Game | Launch Size | Current Size (with updates) |
|---|---|---|
| GTA V (PS3, 2013) | 18GB | 105GB (PS5) |
| GTA V (PS4, 2014) | 50GB | 105GB (PS5) |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018) | 99GB (PS4) / 150GB (PC) | 150GB+ |
| GTA: The Trilogy DE (2021) | 45GB | 45GB |
If RDR2 needed 99GB on a base PS4 in 2018 — hardware with slow 5,400 RPM laptop drives — GTA 6 on current consoles with 4K textures, ray tracing, and a map reportedly twice the size of GTA V’s is not coming in under 150GB. The floor is probably 180GB. The ceiling could reach 250GB.
Second, the trailer footage. Trailer 1 showed dense urban environments with unique NPC models, layered building interiors, and what looks like uncompressed 4K texture work. That kind of asset density chews through storage. Games built for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S from the ground up — no last-gen port dragging them down — routinely cross 100GB. Final Fantasy XVI is 90GB. Horizon Forbidden West is 98GB. GTA 6 is a much bigger game than either, and both of those are single-player only. GTA 6 ships with an entire online mode attached.
Third, the pre-load window. Take-Two confirmed pre-loading for GTA 6 begins 48 hours before launch. Companies do not offer 48-hour pre-loads for 50GB games. You offer 48 hours because the file is enormous and download servers will be crushed on launch day.
My estimate: 200GB to 230GB at launch, growing past 250GB with updates over the first year. If you have less than 250GB free on your console right now, you need a plan. Not a “maybe I will delete something later” plan — an actual plan.
PS5 Storage: What You Actually Have
The PS5 box says 825GB. The system menu also says 825GB. But Sony’s OS reserves 158GB for system files, background caching, and automatic trophy recording. You get 667GB usable.
Here is what that looks like with a typical game library installed:
| Game | Approximate Size |
|---|---|
| Call of Duty (Warzone + Black Ops 6) | 180GB |
| NBA 2K25 | 150GB |
| Fortnite | 50GB |
| GTA V (PS5 version) | 105GB |
| Total (4 games) | 485GB |
| Remaining free space | 182GB |
| GTA 6 (estimated) | 200–230GB |
| Shortfall | 18–48GB |
Four games. Add GTA 6 and you hit the wall. The math is not complicated — it is just brutal. And this is before the first GTA 6 content patch adds another 15–25GB.
Xbox Series X|S Storage Situation
Xbox Series X gives you 802GB usable from its 1TB drive — better than PS5. But the Series S ships with only 364GB usable from 512GB total. GTA 6 alone could swallow two-thirds of that drive.
| Console | Total SSD | Usable Space | GTA 6 % of Drive |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 | 825GB | 667GB | ~30–35% |
| PS5 Pro | 2TB | ~1.85TB | ~11–12% |
| Xbox Series X | 1TB | 802GB | ~25–29% |
| Xbox Series S | 512GB | 364GB | ~55–63% |
If you own a Series S, you have a real storage problem. GTA 6 will likely be the only AAA game on your console at any given time. Microsoft requires Series S support for all Xbox releases — the game will run. But you might be deleting and reinstalling other titles constantly just to stay current.
I checked this math on my own PS5 two weeks ago. 667GB total. Six games installed. 82GB free. GTA 6 would not fit. I ordered a 2TB NVMe the next day. If you are in the same situation — and based on the average PS5 owner’s library, most people are — the SSD section below is the part you actually need to read.
How to Free Up Space Before November
If buying an SSD is not in the budget right now, here is how to make space without spending anything:
- Delete games you already finished. PS5 tracks hours played per title. Sort your library by last played date. If a game has not been opened in six months and you beat the main story, delete it. Save data stays in the cloud if you have PS Plus. You lose nothing.
- Move PS4 games to a cheap external HDD. PS5 only requires the internal SSD for PS5-native games. PS4 titles run fine from a $45 1TB external USB drive. Shift them off the internal storage and free up 100GB or more.
- Clear the capture gallery. PS5 automatically records a 15-second clip every time you earn a trophy. Check your Media Gallery — I found 23GB of trophy videos from games I played once and never touched again. Delete all of it.
- Check the “Other” storage category. The PS5 storage screen has a mysterious “Other” section. It sometimes holds 50GB+ of cached system data. The only way to clear it is rebuilding the database in Safe Mode. It takes 10 minutes and it works. Google “PS5 rebuild database safe mode” for the exact button sequence.
- Reinstall games with years of patches. Some games bloat over time because old update files are never deleted when new patches install. A fresh download is sometimes 15–25GB smaller than a two-year-old install with accumulated patches. Redownloading is annoying but it frees real space when nothing else works.
Options 1 through 4 free up 50–100GB for most people. That might be enough for GTA 6 at launch. But if you also want to keep Call of Duty or NBA 2K on the drive, start shopping for an SSD.
Best SSD Upgrades for GTA 6
We covered this in more detail in our PS5 SSD guide. Here is the fast version:
| SSD | Price | Speed | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| WD_BLACK SN850P 2TB | ~$160 | 7,300 MB/s | Best overall, Sony-licensed |
| Samsung 990 Pro 2TB | ~$150 | 7,450 MB/s | Fastest speeds, needs heatsink |
| Corsair MP600 Pro LPX 2TB | ~$140 | 7,100 MB/s | Best value, heatsink included |
| Seagate Expansion Card 2TB | ~$200 | Internal speed | Xbox Series only, plug-and-play |
For PS5, any PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive rated at 5,500 MB/s or faster works. The WD_BLACK SN850P is the safest pick — Sony officially licensed it for PS5, and installation takes five minutes with a small Phillips screwdriver. I installed one three weeks ago. Opening the box to booting the console: 7 minutes. Most of that was finding a screwdriver that fit.
For Xbox Series X|S, you need the Seagate Expansion Card or the newer WD_BLACK C50. Standard NVMe drives will not work — Microsoft used a proprietary port. The Seagate card costs roughly $40 more per terabyte than a PS5-equivalent NVMe. It stings. But there is no workaround.
One warning: do not wait until November 10 to order. SSD prices on Amazon typically tick up 10–15% in the two weeks before a major console game launch, because everyone has the same idea at the same time. Buy in September or early October.
Digital vs Disc: Does the Disc Version Save Storage?
No. This is the single most common misconception before every major game release.
The PS5 and Xbox Series X install the entire game to the internal SSD regardless of whether you bought the disc or the digital download. The disc acts as a license verification key — it spins up briefly when you launch the game to confirm you own it, then stops. All game assets load from the SSD because Blu-ray read speeds cap out around 160 MB/s. Modern games built for 5,500 MB/s NVMe storage cannot stream assets from a spinning disc.
Buying the physical edition saves zero gigabytes. The only thing it saves is the initial download time — and even that advantage shrinks when a 30GB day-one patch drops and you are downloading it regardless of which version you bought.
Buy the disc for resale value and collecting. Do not buy it thinking you are dodging the storage problem.
Quick Answers
Q: Will GTA 6 require an SSD on PC?
Almost certainly yes. RDR2 already lists an SSD as recommended for PC four years ago. By the time the GTA 6 PC port arrives — likely late 2027 or 2028 — hard drives will be even further behind. Budget for at least a 500GB NVMe SSD if you plan on playing the PC version.
Q: Can I use an external HDD for GTA 6 on PS5?
No. PS5-native games must run from the internal SSD or an internally installed NVMe expansion card. External hard drives only work for playing PS4 games on PS5.
Q: Is GTA Online a separate download from GTA 6?
Rockstar has not confirmed this. If they follow the GTA V model, GTA Online will be built into the main game install — one download, one launcher, one total file size. But they might split them this time. Nobody outside Rockstar knows yet.
Q: I pre-ordered digitally. When do I need the free space — now or at launch?
At pre-load, not at purchase. You can pre-order with zero free space. The storage check happens when pre-load begins, which is 48 hours before launch. You need the space by November 17 at the latest.
Q: Does the $100 Ultimate Edition take more storage than the $80 Standard Edition?
Probably a tiny amount more. The Ultimate extras — bonus vehicles, weapon skins, outfits — are small unlock files measured in megabytes. The core game data (textures, audio, map) is identical across editions. Expect maybe 2–5GB extra for the Ultimate Edition at most.
Q: Will PS5 Pro load GTA 6 faster than base PS5?
The PS5 Pro upgraded the GPU, not the SSD. Both consoles use the same 5,500 MB/s internal drive. Load times should be nearly identical. The Pro’s advantage is higher frame rates and resolution, not faster storage.
Bottom Line
Clear 250GB on your console before November 19. That is the number. Not 200GB. Not “I will see how big it is and then decide.” 250GB covers the game, the day-one patch, and enough breathing room for the first year of updates without constantly shuffling files.
If you cannot free 250GB — and based on the PS5’s 667GB usable space, most people cannot without deleting half their library — buy a 2TB NVMe SSD in September before prices spike. The WD_BLACK SN850P and Samsung 990 Pro are the two safest options and both cost roughly the same as one Ultimate Edition pre-order.
I made this exact mistake with RDR2 in 2018. Had 98GB free for a 99GB install. Spent launch night staring at a storage full error, frantically deleting old screenshots, while my friends were already riding horses. Do not do that.
