GTA V’s map covers roughly 75 square kilometers. That number has been repeated in every map comparison article since 2013 and it tells you almost nothing useful.
The GTA 6 map size is the single most Googled question about the game that Rockstar has not answered directly. And with good reason — square mileage is the wrong way to compare open-world maps. A dense city block has more actual game content than a square mile of empty desert. GTA V understood this. GTA 6, based on everything in Trailer 1 and Trailer 2, understands it even better.
Here is what we actually know about the GTA 6 map size, how it compares to GTA V beyond just area, and what a bigger map means for how the game plays.

How Big Is the GTA 6 Map Size? What We Know
What the Evidence Shows
Rockstar has not released an official map or square mileage number. But we have three solid sources to work from.
Trailer footage analysis. Mapping communities on Reddit and GTAForums have been stitching together terrain from both trailers since Trailer 1 dropped in December 2023. Based on landmark positions, road networks, and visible draw distances, the consensus estimate puts the GTA 6 map size at roughly 125 to 150 square kilometers. That is about 1.7 to 2 times the size of GTA V.
The Bloomberg report. Jason Schreier’s 2022 report on GTA 6 development described the map as “larger than any previous Rockstar game” and noted that the original plan for three cities (Vice City, Port Gellhorn, and a third location) was scaled back during development. The final version reportedly focuses on Vice City as the centerpiece with surrounding towns and rural areas across the state of Leonida. Schreier’s reporting on Rockstar has been accurate going back to Red Dead Redemption 2’s development, so when he says the map is bigger, the map is bigger.
The trailer density. Watch Trailer 1 again and pay attention to the shot variety. Beach crowds. Swamp airboats. Downtown gridlock. Suburban house parties. Industrial docklands. Rural dirt roads. That variety of biomes in a single trailer is not an accident. It tells you Rockstar built a map with distinct regions, not one big city surrounded by filler. GTA V had three biomes: urban, desert, and mountain/forest. Trailer footage suggests Leonida has at least five: urban Vice City, the Everglades-equivalent wetlands, suburban sprawl, rural farmland, and coastal beach towns.
GTA 6 Map Size vs GTA 5: The Numbers That Matter
Square kilometers are easy to compare. But they are also misleading. So here is a better breakdown:
| GTA V (2013) | GTA 6 (2026, estimated) | |
|---|---|---|
| Total area | ~75 km² | ~125-150 km² |
| Urban area | ~12 km² (Los Santos) | ~25-35 km² (Vice City, est.) |
| Rural / wilderness | ~63 km² | ~100-115 km² |
| Water coverage | ~30% of total | 40-50% (Florida coastline + Everglades) |
| Playable interiors | ~50 (limited access) | Unknown (expected 200+) |
| Verticality | Low (3-4 floors typical) | Medium-high (high-rises, multi-level) |
The urban area estimate is the most important number on this table. Los Santos in GTA V is about 12 square kilometers of dense city. Based on Trailer 1’s Vice City skyline — which shows roughly double the downtown footprint of Los Santos — plus the surrounding urban sprawl visible in highway shots, Vice City is probably 25 to 35 square kilometers. That means the city alone could be bigger than all of Los Santos plus half of Blaine County.
But urban area alone is not the whole story. Rockstar invested heavily in interiors this time — Trailer 1 showed a convenience store robbery where you can see detailed shelves, a back office, and a working security camera. That level of interior detail was absent from GTA V outside of scripted missions. If GTA 6 has 200-plus enterable buildings compared to GTA V’s roughly 50, the effective playable space is far larger than the square footage suggests.
The Water Problem
Why Water Skews the Numbers
Here is where the GTA 6 map size numbers get tricky: Florida is half water.
For context, GTA V’s map is about 30 percent ocean, rivers, and lakes. The Alamo Sea sits in the middle of Blaine County eating up square mileage that looks impressive on a map but generates zero gameplay unless you own a boat — which almost nobody does outside of specific missions.
GTA 6’s Leonida is based on Florida. That means the Everglades, the Keys, mangrove coastlines, and the Atlantic Ocean. Estimates from map analysts put water at 40 to 50 percent of the total map area. So at 125 to 150 square kilometers total, the actual walkable land might be 63 to 90 square kilometers — not much bigger than GTA V’s roughly 52 square kilometers of land.
The saving grace: Rockstar appears to have built water into the core gameplay loop. Trailer 1 showed airboats, speedboats, jet skis, and what looked like underwater exploration. If boats and water activities are integrated into missions rather than being optional diversions, then water area counts as content rather than filler. That would flip the water problem from a weakness into a strength.
I am skeptical that 50 percent water coverage is a good thing. GTA V’s ocean is gorgeous and utterly wasted because there is simply no reason to go there. Maybe Rockstar fixed this. Maybe they did not. Nobody outside Rockstar knows, and that uncertainty should temper any excitement about a 150 square kilometer number.
Density Matters More Than Area
How GTA V Wastes Its Own Map
Of course, GTA V’s map is big but uneven. The top third of the map — Paleto Bay, Mount Chiliad, the sawmill — is beautiful and almost completely irrelevant after the story ends. Most GTA Online players never leave Los Santos. They spawn in their apartment, drive to their office, and grind business missions in the city. The northern half of the map is set dressing.
GTA 6 appears to be designed differently. Trailer footage shows activity across all regions: crowds on every beach, traffic in every town, NPCs having conversations that suggest scripted routines rather than random spawns. If Rockstar distributes missions, businesses, and activities across the full map instead of clustering everything in Vice City, a 125 square kilometer map with 70 percent useful coverage beats a 75 square kilometer map with 40 percent useful coverage by a wide margin.
The comparison that actually matters is not GTA 6 map size vs GTA 5. It is useful playable area vs wasted space. And on that metric, everything in the trailers suggests GTA 6 is a genuine step forward.
Quick Answers
Map Basics
Q: Has Rockstar released an official GTA 6 map?
No. The only official source is trailer footage. Rockstar typically releases the full game map on launch day or a few days before. Expect it in the first week of November 2026 at the earliest.
Q: How much bigger is GTA 6’s map than GTA 5’s?
Estimated 1.7 to 2 times bigger in total area. On land only, probably 1.2 to 1.7 times bigger. The urban area — the part you will actually spend time in — is likely 2 to 3 times larger than Los Santos.
Q: Will GTA 6 have multiple cities like GTA San Andreas?
Not like San Andreas. The current understanding is one major city (Vice City) with several smaller towns across Leonida. Port Gellhorn, visible in Trailer 1, appears to be the second-largest settlement. A third city was reportedly cut during development and may appear as DLC or GTA Online 6 content later.
Gameplay Impact
Q: Is the GTA 6 map all unlocked from the start?
Unknown. GTA V locked the northern half of the map until story completion. Red Dead Redemption 2 locked parts of the map by chapter. Rockstar has not confirmed either approach for GTA 6. Based on the trailers showing gameplay across all regions, the map may be fully open from the start — but that is speculation.
Q: Does a bigger map mean more driving between missions?
That depends on how Rockstar handles mission start locations and fast travel. GTA V’s missions were clustered in Los Santos after the first few hours. If GTA 6 spreads its story across Leonida, expect more travel time between objectives. Trailer footage showed aircraft, boats, and what looked like an expanded taxi/fast-travel system, suggesting Rockstar is aware of the problem.
Q: Will the GTA 6 map expand over time like Fortnite?
Rockstar has never done live map changes and there is no evidence they will start with GTA 6. However, GTA Online 6 will likely receive new locations and map expansions over its lifespan, the same way GTA Online added Cayo Perico in 2020. Those would be Online-only additions, not story mode changes.
Bottom Line
The GTA 6 map is almost certainly bigger than GTA V — probably by a factor of 1.5 to 2. That headline number will drive a lot of YouTube thumbnails between now and November 19.
But the real difference is not size. It is density. A Vice City with 200-plus enterable interiors, five distinct biomes with missions distributed across them, and water that might actually have a purpose is a fundamentally different kind of map than GTA V’s Los Santos surrounded by 80 percent filler. The GTA 6 map does not just need to be bigger. It needs to earn its square mileage. Whether it does is the single question neither trailer footage nor map analysis nor insider reporting can answer before November.
