You’re staring at a $7.99 monthly charge and wondering whether to click Subscribe. GTA VI launches November 19, 2026. Rockstar says GTA+ is a “long-term platform strategy.” But does that actually mean anything — or is it just marketing language designed to keep your subscription running?
After pulling apart the numbers, the answer splits into three categories: current GTA Online players (yes, it’s worth it), GTA VI-only speculators (probably not yet), and people who play both (the math is surprisingly good).

The Short Answer
| You Are… | Subscribe Now? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Active GTA Online player (10+ hrs/month) | Yes | Monthly benefits exceed $7.99 in Shark Card value |
| GTA VI-only, don’t play Online | Wait | No confirmed GTA$ transfer yet. Don’t pay for speculation |
| Play both Online now and will play GTA VI | Yes — if you can afford $8/month | Build GTA$ balance now at 4x Shark Card rates. Potential head start in Vice City |
| Single-player only | No | GTA+ has zero single-player benefits |
GTA+ Subscription Cost: How Much Per Month?
GTA+ costs $7.99/month on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. No annual plan is available yet.
The Shark Card Math (This Is Why GTA+ Exists)
If you’ve ever bought a Shark Card to skip the grind, GTA+ makes them obsolete. Here’s the comparison that explains why Rockstar launched this subscription:
| Purchase | Cost | GTA$ | Cost per Million GTA$ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Megalodon Shark Card | $99.99 | 10,000,000 | $10.00 |
| Whale Shark Card | $49.99 | 3,500,000 | $14.28 |
| Bull Shark Card | $9.99 | 500,000 | $19.98 |
| GTA+ (1 month, claim all) | $7.99 | ~3,500,000 | $2.28 |
| GTA+ (12 months, claim all) | $95.88 | ~42,000,000+ | $2.28 |
GTA+ delivers GTA$ at roughly one-quarter the cost of Shark Cards. A year of GTA+ costs less than one Megalodon Shark Card and gives you over four times the in-game cash. For price and purchase details, see our GTA Plus price guide.
The catch: you must log in and claim the rewards. Miss a month, lose that month’s benefits. No stacking. No back-claiming.
Will GTA$ Transfer to GTA 6?
This is the question that determines whether subscribing now is smart or wasteful. Rockstar hasn’t confirmed anything. But the evidence leans toward partial transfer:
What supports a GTA$ transfer:
- Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick called GTA+ “a long-term platform strategy, not a promotional tool for one game” during a February 2026 earnings call
- The GTA+ FAQ was updated in May 2026 to reference “future Rockstar titles” instead of limiting language to GTA Online
- GTA VI will almost certainly share the same currency system — GTA Online’s economy has been running for over a decade and is deeply integrated into Rockstar’s revenue model
- There’s no business reason to make players start from zero in GTA VI’s online mode. Subscription retention drops if accumulated balances become worthless
What argues against it:
- No official confirmation exists. The updated FAQ is suggestive, not contractual
- Rockstar could inflate GTA VI prices so that GTA$ balances from GTA Online become nearly worthless in the new economy
- A separate “GTA VI Premium” tier could leave current $7.99 subscribers with reduced benefits
My estimate: GTA$ balances will transfer, but at a reduced effective value. Rockstar won’t let millionaires from GTA Online buy everything in Vice City on day one. They’ll adjust prices upward or add new premium currencies. Subscribing now at $7.99 is a calculated bet — not a guaranteed win.
What Benefits Are Likely to Carry Over
Based on Rockstar’s patterns and GTA VI’s confirmed features:
High probability of transferring:
- GTA$ balance (possibly at adjusted value)
- Hao’s Special Works upgrades (HSW was built for next-gen — dropping it for GTA VI makes no sense)
- Monthly free vehicles (retention mechanic, not a GTA Online exclusive)
Medium probability:
- Vinewood Club Garage concept (GTA VI has the most vehicles ever — you’ll need storage)
- GTA+ exclusive clothing and cosmetics (easy to port between games)
Will not transfer:
- Los Santos properties and businesses (different city, different map)
- GTA Online-specific mission bonuses
- Anything tied to the current map
Who Should Subscribe Now (March-November 2026)
Subscribe before GTA VI launches if:
You play GTA Online at least 10 hours a month. The free vehicle and GTA$500,000 alone justify $7.99 — it’s cheaper than buying Shark Cards for the same amount of in-game currency. You’re already spending time in Los Santos. The subscription makes that time more efficient.
You want a GTA$ cushion for Vice City. Eight months of GTA+ (April to November 2026) deposits GTA$4 million into your account. That’s $40-50 of Shark Card value for $64 in subscription fees. If even a portion of that balance transfers to GTA VI, you’ve bought a head start at a quarter of the normal price. For pricing details, read our GTA+ price guide.
You collect cars. GTA+ vehicles stay exclusive for months before regular players can buy them. If vehicle collecting is part of why you play, the subscription is cheaper than buying those cars through Shark Cards later.
However, wait if:
You don’t play GTA Online. Paying $7.99 a month hoping benefits transfer to GTA VI — without actually using the subscription now — is spending money on speculation. There are cheaper ways to gamble.
Single-player is all you care about. GTA+ has zero single-player benefits. GTA VI’s story mode won’t require a subscription. You’re paying for an online mode you won’t touch.
You want to see GTA VI integration details first. Rockstar will announce exact GTA VI benefits before November. There’s no penalty for waiting until that announcement to decide.
The GTA$ Pre-Launch Strategy
If you decide to subscribe, here’s how to maximize the value:
- Subscribe by August 2026 to capture 3-4 months of deposits before launch (GTA$1.5-2 million)
- Claim every monthly reward. Set a calendar reminder. Missing a month wastes $7.99
- Bank the GTA$500K each month. Don’t spend it. Let it accumulate for GTA VI
- Collect the free vehicles. Even if you don’t drive them, they’re assets in your account that may carry over
- Re-evaluate after Rockstar’s GTA VI GTA+ announcement. If benefits are worse than expected, cancel
What Happens After GTA VI Launches
Three things become clear only after November 19:
- Whether GTA$ actually transfers and at what rate
- Whether GTA+ price goes up (expect $9.99 within 12-18 months of launch)
- Whether a new “Premium” tier launches alongside GTA VI
My recommendation: subscribe now if you actively play GTA Online. The current benefits alone justify $7.99 — any GTA VI carryover is a bonus, not the reason to subscribe. If you’re subscribing purely for GTA VI speculation, wait until Rockstar makes the official announcement.
Bottom Line
GTA+ is worth $7.99 a month if you play GTA Online. The Shark Card math alone proves that. One month of claimed benefits equals $40-50 in Shark Card purchases. A year costs less than one Megalodon Shark Card and delivers four times the GTA$.
If you’re subscribing purely for GTA VI — and you don’t touch GTA Online — wait. Rockstar hasn’t confirmed GTA$ transfers. Paying $64-96 over the next 8-12 months on an assumption isn’t a strategy. It’s a bet.
If you play both? Subscribe now. The current benefits pay for themselves. And if even part of your accumulated GTA$ balance follows you to Vice City, you’ll have bought the cheapest head start available.
