The wrong gun on the wrong map loses you the raid before you fire a single shot. This Marathon weapons gear guide fixes that.**

Gear in Marathon is not about what looks cool. It is about what works on each map. A shotgun that dominates in Vestan Deeps will get you killed on Eos Chasm before you are in range to use it. A sniper rifle that controls Helios Array is dead weight in the tight corridors of Talos Station.

This Marathon weapons gear guide ranks every weapon class, lists the best attachments per gun, and gives you the exact meta loadouts for each map. If you are still deciding what to bring based on what is in your stash, stop. Bring what the map demands.

S-Tier: Assault Rifle

The AR is the most versatile weapon in Marathon. It works on three of four maps and is never a bad choice. The AR’s strength is adaptability: it handles medium-range engagements cleanly, can contest close range with hip fire, and with the right scope can reach out to DMR ranges.

Best ARs in order:

  1. MK-7 Commando — Best-in-slot. Highest damage per round, manageable recoil.
  2. VK-44 Tactical — Faster fire rate, better for close-medium. Slightly less damage.
  3. R-22 Standard — Budget option. Reliable but outclassed by MK-7 and VK-44.

S-Tier: DMR

The DMR is the king of Eos Chasm and Helios Array. If you can see your target, you can hit them. Headshots with a DMR are the fastest time-to-kill in the game at medium-long range.

Best DMRs in order:

  1. SR-25 Precision — Highest damage per shot. Two-tap to the chest on unarmored targets.
  2. M-110 Recon — Slightly faster fire rate, more forgiving. Best for newer DMR users.

A-Tier: SMG

SMGs dominate Vestan Deeps and hold their own in close-quarters sections of Talos Station. The fire rate advantage means you win fights inside 15 meters against AR users. Outside 15 meters, switch to your secondary or reposition.

Best SMGs in order:

  1. VX-9 Vector — Highest RPM. Melts armor at close range. Ammo-hungry.
  2. MP-7 Compact — More controllable, better at medium-close. The all-rounder SMG.

A-Tier: Shotgun

Shotguns are map-specific weapons. On Vestan Deeps, they are S-tier. Everywhere else, they are a liability. The one-shot potential in tight corridors is unmatched, but the damage falloff is brutal. Past 10 meters, you are better off with your secondary.

Best Shotguns:

  1. M-870 Breacher — Highest damage per shell. Slow pump action.
  2. S-12 Semi-Auto — Faster follow-up shots. Less damage per shell but more forgiving.

The Golden Rule of Weapon Choice

Never bring a weapon that does not match your map’s engagement distance. Check the map section below before every raid.

2. Map-Specific Meta Loadouts

Each map has a dominant engagement range. Build your loadout around it.

3. Best Attachments Per Weapon Class

Attachments make the gun. A stock MK-7 with the right attachments outperforms a naked SR-25 every time.

AR Attachments (MK-7 Commando)

Attachment SlotBest PickWhy
OpticHolo-4X HybridFlip between 1x and 4x. Covers all Talos engagement ranges.
MuzzleCompensatorReduces vertical recoil. Essential for sustained fire.
UnderbarrelVertical GripFurther recoil reduction. Stacks with compensator.

4. Armor and Helmet Guide

Armor in Marathon is a trade-off: protection versus mobility. The right choice depends on your map and playstyle.

Armor TypeDamage ReductionMovement PenaltyBest For
Light (Polymer Vest)15%NoneEos Chasm, solo runs, speed-focused play
Medium (Composite Plate)25%-5% speedTalos Station, balanced play, most common choice
Heavy (Titan Plate)40%-12% speedVestan Deeps, team play, holding positions

Helmet Rankings

HelmetProtectionSpecial AbilityCostWorth It?
Elite Combat35% headshot reductionNone8,500✅ Endgame only
Recon Helmet20% headshot reduction1.5x zoom toggle5,000✅ Best value for Eos/Helios
Standard Combat25% headshot reductionNone3,000✅ Default pick
Basic Helmet10% headshot reductionNone1,000⚠️ Only if broke

The helmet rule: never raid without one. A single headshot from a DMR kills an unarmored head instantly. Even a Basic Helmet gives you one extra bullet of survivability. That one bullet is the difference between extracting and watching the death screen.

5. Grenade and Consumable Guide

Most players carry grenades and never use them. That is leaving free kills on the table.

Grenade TypeEffectBest Used OnBring This Many
FragExplosive damage in 5m radiusRoom clearing, flushing campers2 (all maps)
SmokeBlocks vision for 12 secondsCrossing open areas, reviving teammates2 (Eos Chasm)
FlashbangBlinds and deafens for 3 secondsPushing rooms, breaching boss lairs2 (Vestan Deeps)
IncendiaryArea denial, 8-second burnBlocking extracts, zoning enemies1 (Helios, team play)

Med Efficiency

Med TypeHeal AmountUse TimeCostEfficiency
Basic Medkit40 HP3 seconds200⭐⭐
Advanced Medkit75 HP2 seconds500⭐⭐⭐ Best value
Stim Shot25 HP instant0.5 seconds800⭐⭐⭐ Save your life button
Surgical KitFull HP8 seconds1,200⭐ Only between fights

Always carry 2 Advanced Medkits minimum. Add a Stim if you can afford it. The Stim’s instant 25 HP is the difference between winning a trade and losing it.

6. Budget Loadouts (Under 5,000 Credits)

When you are low on funds or running scavenger raids, these budget builds keep you competitive.

MapPrimaryCostArmorCostTotal
Talos StationR-22 Standard2,000Polymer Vest (Light)8002,800
Eos ChasmM-110 Recon2,500Polymer Vest (Light)8003,300
Vestan DeepsS-12 Semi-Auto2,200Composite Plate (Medium)1,2003,400
Helios ArrayR-22 Standard2,000Composite Plate (Medium)1,2003,200

Budget rule: spend 60% of your budget on the gun, 25% on armor, 15% on meds and grenades. A good gun with bad armor wins more fights than bad gun with good armor.

7. The Pre-Raid Gear Checklist (30 Seconds)

Before every raid, check these five things. Skipping this step is how you load into Helios with a shotgun in your hands.

  1. Does my primary weapon match this map’s engagement distance? AR/DMR for Eos and Helios. AR/Shotgun for Vestan. AR for Talos.
  2. Do I have at least 2 Advanced Medkits? If not, buy them before queuing.
  3. Is my armor appropriate? Light for speed maps. Medium for balanced. Heavy for CQB.
  4. Do I have grenades that match the map? Smoke for Eos. Flash for Vestan. Frag for all.
  5. Is my sidearm loaded and ready? You will need it. Make sure it has ammo.

Marathon Weapons Gear Guide: The Bottom Line

Your loadout is a decision, not an afterthought. The best players spend as much time in the gear screen as they do in the raid. They match their gun to the map, their armor to the threat, and their consumables to the objective.

For new players: run the Talos Station AR build (MK-7 or R-22 + Medium Armor + 2 Medkits). It works everywhere. Do not experiment with shotguns or snipers until you know the maps.

For intermediate players: start matching weapons to maps. DMR on Eos. Shotgun on Vestan. This alone will increase your survival rate by 20% or more.

For advanced players: optimize your attachments. A fully kitted SR-25 is an entirely different weapon from the stock version. Invest in your guns. They are the only thing between you and the death screen.

Bring the right gun to the right fight. Check your meds. Load your sidearm. Now go extract.
