The wrong gun on the wrong map loses you the raid before you fire a single shot. This Marathon weapons gear guide fixes that.**
Gear in Marathon is not about what looks cool. It is about what works on each map. A shotgun that dominates in Vestan Deeps will get you killed on Eos Chasm before you are in range to use it. A sniper rifle that controls Helios Array is dead weight in the tight corridors of Talos Station.
This Marathon weapons gear guide ranks every weapon class, lists the best attachments per gun, and gives you the exact meta loadouts for each map. If you are still deciding what to bring based on what is in your stash, stop. Bring what the map demands.

1. Weapon Tier List (Patch 1.0 Meta)

After analyzing the current meta across all four maps, here is where every weapon class stands.
Overall Weapon Rankings
| Tier | Weapon Class | Best On | Worst On | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S | Assault Rifle (AR) | Talos Station, Helios Array | Vestan Deeps | 9.2/10 |
| S | DMR (Marksman Rifle) | Eos Chasm, Helios Array | Vestan Deeps | 9.0/10 |
| A | SMG | Vestan Deeps, Talos Station | Helios Array | 8.5/10 |
| A | Shotgun | Vestan Deeps | Eos Chasm | 8.3/10 |
| B | Sniper Rifle | Eos Chasm, Helios Array | Vestan Deeps | 7.8/10 |
| B | LMG | Talos Station (team) | Vestan Deeps | 7.5/10 |
| C | Pistol (sidearm only) | Any (as backup) | Never as primary | 5.0/10 |
S-Tier: Assault Rifle
The AR is the most versatile weapon in Marathon. It works on three of four maps and is never a bad choice. The AR’s strength is adaptability: it handles medium-range engagements cleanly, can contest close range with hip fire, and with the right scope can reach out to DMR ranges.
Best ARs in order:
- MK-7 Commando — Best-in-slot. Highest damage per round, manageable recoil.
- VK-44 Tactical — Faster fire rate, better for close-medium. Slightly less damage.
- R-22 Standard — Budget option. Reliable but outclassed by MK-7 and VK-44.
S-Tier: DMR
The DMR is the king of Eos Chasm and Helios Array. If you can see your target, you can hit them. Headshots with a DMR are the fastest time-to-kill in the game at medium-long range.
Best DMRs in order:
- SR-25 Precision — Highest damage per shot. Two-tap to the chest on unarmored targets.
- M-110 Recon — Slightly faster fire rate, more forgiving. Best for newer DMR users.
A-Tier: SMG
SMGs dominate Vestan Deeps and hold their own in close-quarters sections of Talos Station. The fire rate advantage means you win fights inside 15 meters against AR users. Outside 15 meters, switch to your secondary or reposition.
Best SMGs in order:
- VX-9 Vector — Highest RPM. Melts armor at close range. Ammo-hungry.
- MP-7 Compact — More controllable, better at medium-close. The all-rounder SMG.
A-Tier: Shotgun
Shotguns are map-specific weapons. On Vestan Deeps, they are S-tier. Everywhere else, they are a liability. The one-shot potential in tight corridors is unmatched, but the damage falloff is brutal. Past 10 meters, you are better off with your secondary.
Best Shotguns:
- M-870 Breacher — Highest damage per shell. Slow pump action.
- S-12 Semi-Auto — Faster follow-up shots. Less damage per shell but more forgiving.
The Golden Rule of Weapon Choice
Never bring a weapon that does not match your map’s engagement distance. Check the map section below before every raid.
2. Map-Specific Meta Loadouts

Each map has a dominant engagement range. Build your loadout around it.
Talos Station — Balanced
| Slot | Best Choice | Budget Alternative | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary | MK-7 Commando (AR) | R-22 Standard | Mixed ranges. Concourse is medium, corridors are CQB. |
| Sidearm | MP-7 Compact (SMG) | Any pistol | Backpack-friendly close-range option for indoor fights. |
| Armor | Medium (Composite Plate) | Light (Polymer Vest) | Mobility matters more than tanking on Talos. |
| Helmet | Standard Combat Helmet | Basic Helmet | Protects against the most common headshot calibers. |
| Grenades | 2x Frag | 1x Frag | Clear corners in Cargo Bay and the Concourse approach. |
| Meds | 2x Advanced Medkit | 2x Basic Medkit | Talos has plenty of med spawns. Do not overpack. |
Eos Chasm — Long Range Priority
| Slot | Best Choice | Budget Alternative | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary | SR-25 Precision (DMR) | M-110 Recon | Vertical map demands range. Engage from high ground. |
| Sidearm | VX-9 Vector (SMG) | MP-7 Compact | Tunnel sections demand close-range capability. |
| Armor | Light (Polymer Vest) | Light | Speed beats armor on Eos. You need to move between cover fast. |
| Helmet | Recon Helmet (+zoom) | Standard Combat | Spotting targets at range is your biggest advantage. |
| Grenades | 2x Smoke | 1x Smoke | Cross the Skybridge. Every time. No exceptions. |
| Meds | 2x Advanced Medkit + 1x Stim | 2x Basic Medkit | Stim for the Skybridge crossing. Pop it, run, do not stop. |
Vestan Deeps — Close Quarters
| Slot | Best Choice | Budget Alternative | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary | M-870 Breacher (Shotgun) | S-12 Semi-Auto | One-shot potential in every tunnel. Unmatched in CQB. |
| Sidearm | MP-7 Compact (SMG) | VX-9 Vector | For the rare medium-range sightline. |
| Armor | Heavy (Titan Plate) | Medium | You will get shot. Close quarters means trades are inevitable. |
| Helmet | Heavy Combat Helmet | Standard Combat | Protects against shotgun pellet headshots. |
| Grenades | 2x Flashbang | 2x Frag | Flashing a room before entry is mandatory in Vestan. |
| Meds | 3x Advanced Medkit | 3x Basic Medkit | Fights are frequent. Bring more meds than you think. |
Helios Array — Long Range, High Stakes

| Slot | Best Choice | Budget Alternative | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary | SR-25 Precision (DMR) | MK-7 Commando (AR) | Open platforms demand range. DMR rules here. |
| Sidearm | MK-7 Commando (AR) | MP-7 Compact | Stripped-down AR as backup for room clearing. |
| Armor | Medium (Composite Plate) | Medium | Balance of protection and mobility for catwalks. |
| Helmet | Elite Combat Helmet | Recon Helmet | Best protection you can afford. Helios veterans run headshots. |
| Grenades | 2x Frag + 1x Smoke | 2x Frag | Smoke for Control Room approach. Frag for everything else. |
| Meds | 3x Advanced Medkit + 1x Stim | 3x Basic Medkit | Long raids. Long fights. Pack heavy. |
3. Best Attachments Per Weapon Class
Attachments make the gun. A stock MK-7 with the right attachments outperforms a naked SR-25 every time.
AR Attachments (MK-7 Commando)
| Attachment Slot | Best Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Optic | Holo-4X Hybrid | Flip between 1x and 4x. Covers all Talos engagement ranges. |
| Muzzle | Compensator | Reduces vertical recoil. Essential for sustained fire. |
| Underbarrel | Vertical Grip | Further recoil reduction. Stacks with compensator. |
| Magazine | Extended Mag (+10) | 30 → 40 rounds. One mag can handle two targets. |
| Stock | Light Stock | Faster ADS speed. Wins the peeker’s advantage. |
DMR Attachments (SR-25 Precision)
| Attachment Slot | Best Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Optic | 6X Variable Scope | Zoom range covers Eos and Helios sightlines. |
| Muzzle | Suppressor | Stay off the map when you fire. Critical on Eos and Helios. |
| Underbarrel | Bipod | Deploy for zero-recoil follow-up shots on ledges. |
| Magazine | Standard 20-Round | Extended mags slow ADS too much. 20 rounds is enough. |
| Stock | Marksman Stock | Reduces scope sway. Essential for headshots at 200m+. |
SMG Attachments (VX-9 Vector)
| Attachment Slot | Best Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Optic | Reflex 1X | Fastest dot acquisition. You are fighting inside 15m. |
| Muzzle | Flash Hider | Hide muzzle flash in dark tunnels (Vestan Deeps). |
| Underbarrel | Laser Sight | Hip-fire accuracy bonus. Critical for SMG playstyle. |
| Magazine | Extended Mag (+15) | Vector burns ammo. You need every round. |
| Stock | Folded Stock | Maximum mobility. Strafe speed wins SMG duels. |
Shotgun Attachments (M-870 Breacher)
| Attachment Slot | Best Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Optic | Iron Sights (none) | You will ADS for 0.2 seconds. Skip the optic. |
| Muzzle | Choke | Tightens pellet spread. More one-shot kills at 8-12m. |
| Underbarrel | Laser Sight | Hip-fire accuracy. Same logic as SMG. |
| Magazine | Tube Extension (+2) | 5 → 7 shells before reload. Wins 1v2 fights. |
| Stock | Tactical Stock | Faster pump animation between shots. |
4. Armor and Helmet Guide
Armor in Marathon is a trade-off: protection versus mobility. The right choice depends on your map and playstyle.
| Armor Type | Damage Reduction | Movement Penalty | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light (Polymer Vest) | 15% | None | Eos Chasm, solo runs, speed-focused play |
| Medium (Composite Plate) | 25% | -5% speed | Talos Station, balanced play, most common choice |
| Heavy (Titan Plate) | 40% | -12% speed | Vestan Deeps, team play, holding positions |
Helmet Rankings
| Helmet | Protection | Special Ability | Cost | Worth It? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Elite Combat | 35% headshot reduction | None | 8,500 | ✅ Endgame only |
| Recon Helmet | 20% headshot reduction | 1.5x zoom toggle | 5,000 | ✅ Best value for Eos/Helios |
| Standard Combat | 25% headshot reduction | None | 3,000 | ✅ Default pick |
| Basic Helmet | 10% headshot reduction | None | 1,000 | ⚠️ Only if broke |
The helmet rule: never raid without one. A single headshot from a DMR kills an unarmored head instantly. Even a Basic Helmet gives you one extra bullet of survivability. That one bullet is the difference between extracting and watching the death screen.
5. Grenade and Consumable Guide
Most players carry grenades and never use them. That is leaving free kills on the table.
| Grenade Type | Effect | Best Used On | Bring This Many |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frag | Explosive damage in 5m radius | Room clearing, flushing campers | 2 (all maps) |
| Smoke | Blocks vision for 12 seconds | Crossing open areas, reviving teammates | 2 (Eos Chasm) |
| Flashbang | Blinds and deafens for 3 seconds | Pushing rooms, breaching boss lairs | 2 (Vestan Deeps) |
| Incendiary | Area denial, 8-second burn | Blocking extracts, zoning enemies | 1 (Helios, team play) |
Med Efficiency
| Med Type | Heal Amount | Use Time | Cost | Efficiency |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic Medkit | 40 HP | 3 seconds | 200 | ⭐⭐ |
| Advanced Medkit | 75 HP | 2 seconds | 500 | ⭐⭐⭐ Best value |
| Stim Shot | 25 HP instant | 0.5 seconds | 800 | ⭐⭐⭐ Save your life button |
| Surgical Kit | Full HP | 8 seconds | 1,200 | ⭐ Only between fights |
Always carry 2 Advanced Medkits minimum. Add a Stim if you can afford it. The Stim’s instant 25 HP is the difference between winning a trade and losing it.
6. Budget Loadouts (Under 5,000 Credits)
When you are low on funds or running scavenger raids, these budget builds keep you competitive.
| Map | Primary | Cost | Armor | Cost | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Talos Station | R-22 Standard | 2,000 | Polymer Vest (Light) | 800 | 2,800 |
| Eos Chasm | M-110 Recon | 2,500 | Polymer Vest (Light) | 800 | 3,300 |
| Vestan Deeps | S-12 Semi-Auto | 2,200 | Composite Plate (Medium) | 1,200 | 3,400 |
| Helios Array | R-22 Standard | 2,000 | Composite Plate (Medium) | 1,200 | 3,200 |
Budget rule: spend 60% of your budget on the gun, 25% on armor, 15% on meds and grenades. A good gun with bad armor wins more fights than bad gun with good armor.
7. The Pre-Raid Gear Checklist (30 Seconds)
Before every raid, check these five things. Skipping this step is how you load into Helios with a shotgun in your hands.
- Does my primary weapon match this map’s engagement distance? AR/DMR for Eos and Helios. AR/Shotgun for Vestan. AR for Talos.
- Do I have at least 2 Advanced Medkits? If not, buy them before queuing.
- Is my armor appropriate? Light for speed maps. Medium for balanced. Heavy for CQB.
- Do I have grenades that match the map? Smoke for Eos. Flash for Vestan. Frag for all.
- Is my sidearm loaded and ready? You will need it. Make sure it has ammo.
Marathon Weapons Gear Guide: The Bottom Line
Your loadout is a decision, not an afterthought. The best players spend as much time in the gear screen as they do in the raid. They match their gun to the map, their armor to the threat, and their consumables to the objective.
For new players: run the Talos Station AR build (MK-7 or R-22 + Medium Armor + 2 Medkits). It works everywhere. Do not experiment with shotguns or snipers until you know the maps.
For intermediate players: start matching weapons to maps. DMR on Eos. Shotgun on Vestan. This alone will increase your survival rate by 20% or more.
For advanced players: optimize your attachments. A fully kitted SR-25 is an entirely different weapon from the stock version. Invest in your guns. They are the only thing between you and the death screen.
Bring the right gun to the right fight. Check your meds. Load your sidearm. Now go extract.
